Story Of My Life

*Hate Them Or Love Them*

The Repertoires are back with a bang, launching their own entertainment reality TV show Running with the Reps! This new venture is testimony that they abide by their motto ‘Dream the way you live and live the way you dream.’ These boys are dreamers, trendsetters; they challenge the status quo with a sort of ‘why not’ attitude.
In spite of the challenges that the crew has encountered, they have fought against all odds, keeping each other motivated and kept on pushing. They have crafted the art of performance and managed to establish themselves as one of the best dance crews in the country. They have grown the Repertoires brand into a successful and a highly recognised entity by their peers.
“In searching for a name for the crew, we went through several options including Transmitters and Guess Who, until Nthato Malete came up with the Repertoires,” recalls one of the Repertoires’ managers, Mike Makwala. “This name defines us best. The term ‘repertoire’ means the ability to do something creative and perform it and that’s what the Repertoires are all about,” adds Larry Nhlane.
We are chilling at the Jackal Creek Golf Estate with 3 of the 14 members of the Repertoires: Larry Nqaba Mncube-Nhlane, also known as Larryngitis, Michael Makwala and Mfundo Nyoka, who is one of the newest additions to the crew. Mfundo works in the events side of the business alongside Makhosini Sihlali and Mike. He is also the road manager and helps out in the Repertoires’ other business ventures. In spite of being more than 20 minutes late for the interview the boys were ecstatic and prepared to share frank details about themselves and their upcoming show Running with the Reps.
The Repertoires are a group of young, ambitious, trendy and influential dancers between the ages of 18 and 25. The crew is made up of dancers, managers and DJs. The group was started by Nthato and Larry, who at the time were leaders of different Hip Hop dance crews. They would compete against each other to earn each other’s respect and the title of being the best, but the results usually ended up in a draw. The crews then decided to join forces to form what would become the most successful dance crew in Mzansi history.
The last female member left the group recently. “She was great but she’d feel left out when she was around us. Ladies also tend to be more emotionally inclined. We had to treat her with extra care as we understood she wasn’t just one of the guys,” says Mfundo, giving us a reason for having only males in the crew. He adds, “Both parties mutually decided to follow separate paths and there’s no love lost.”
The Repertoires started off performing at schools and major Hip Hop dance competitions. Their partnership with Hip Hop group, Jozi, propelled their careers to the next level, becoming their official dancers. They toured around South Africa and to various African countries including Nigeria and Malawi. This gave them exposure and more doors started opening up. Since then the Repertoires have been featured in music videos for different artists such as Pro, Slikour and Chomee. They have won several awards including the MTV Base Awards for the Best Live Performance, under Jozi. They have performed for international acts such as Chris Brown, Nas, Keith Murray, Phat Joe, G Unit, The Game (in Nigeria, South Africa and Swaziland), Akon and 50 Cent. They choreographed for the 2009 South African Music Awards and the 2010 Hype Awards, and they performed at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.
“One of my favourite performances was when we were opening for 50 Cent. The crowd went really crazy after our performance,” says Larry. “The weirdest performance for me was when we were performing in Brakpan. We had old ladies coming to us, giving us hugs and kisses,” recalls Mike.
When asked which vegetable they resemble most, the boys said that they resemble a tomato. “You can do anything with a tomato; you can have it raw, slice it up to make a nice salad, you can have it in a sandwich, and you can cook it to make some nice gravy. Like that, we are versatile. We are more than just a dance crew. We have established ourselves as a brand and have branched out into different ventures within the entertainment industry such as modelling, running an events company, being DJs and starting a clothing label,” says Larry, clearly the most talkative member of the crew.
What really impressed me most about this crew is that they have set up a solid management structure, proving that they are making dancing a career and a business. They are not keen on being seen as role models. “Being labelled a role model is a bit heavy for me. I’m still young and I haven’t reached that stage. I’d rather be seen as someone with role model attributes. We are simply living our dream and we want to inspire others to do the same,” says Mike.
The Repertoires have indeed branched out, assuring us that they can do more than dance. Their showRunning with the Reps is set to hit screens in the African continent on DSTV’s VuzuTV from Friday the 4th of March 2011. “We are really excited and are looking forward to the show. It is fresh and edgy, and it will show our supporters that we are human too. We go through the same challenges and problems that people our age go through. Sometimes people don’t understand that,” says Mfundo. The show will give viewers an inside look into the challenges the group members face, having to deal with the attention received from supporters and how that affects the group dynamics. The teenagers in the group have to deal with juggling their school lives with their dancing, whilst having parents who do not approve of their chosen career path. The older members of the group are maturing into adults, having to manage their bills, households, alcoholism, school, social life, girlfriend drama and some, young parenthood.
Apart from the TV show, the Repertoires are working on other projects. “We are working on a project called Rep-Ur-Hood in which we will be giving people in smaller, less recognised parts of the country the opportunity to express their talents. We also have the Rep-a-Tour in which we will be touring around the country, performing for our friends and supporters,” says Larry.
The Repertoires are the pioneers of the urban dance movement and the most innovative urban dance crew Mzansi has ever seen, and they are only getting started. They do what they do best, and they do it well. You can do the same. Remember to ‘dance to express, not to impress’. And again, don’t forget to catch them every Friday from the 4th of March on VuzuTV channel 123 at 7:30pm. Don’t say we didn’t tell you!
Take tips from these boys. I have a feeling their new journey is just beginning.

Kanye West Turned Away At Paris Fashion Week?

Kanye West was reportedly turned away at the door of a show during Paris’ Fashion Week after ignoring that he couldn’t be accommodated. The Hip Hop artist Kanye West has attended many Paris’ Fashion Weeks, but this year he apparently had some sort of trouble getting into two of the shows.

Kanye West requested to attend the Balmain fashion show and was allegedly told that he could not be accommodated.
West assumed that his star status would gain him and his entourage entry at Balmain and reportedly showed up uninvited at the Le Grand Hotel, but unfortunately may have been turned away at the door. To save face, Kanye West slipped out of a side door, according to reports.
Kanye West also reportedly showed up uninvited to the Alexander McQueen show and was not allowed to enter through the front door like the invited guests but was ushered by someone through a side door.
Yet still, reportedly, West, who’s considering his own venture in the fashion world, attended many other shows during the Paris Fashion Week that he was invited to including those of Valentino, Givenchy and Vivienne Westwood.

Waka Flocka Gets Nude For PETA ‘Ink, Not Mink’ Ad Campaign

Waka Flocka gets nude for PETA’s “Ink, Not Mink” ad campaign. The rapper is bearing all with hopes that fewer animals will have to.
Waka is joining PETA in an effort to prevent all the suffering that innocent animals go through everyday when they are slaughtered for their fur. According to PETA, Waka is urging the hip-hop community to “understand what you buy.”

In a behind the scenes with PETA, Waka Flocka spoke on his love for animals and his dismay in animals that are skinned, are bludgeoned, stomped, electrocuted and even skinned alive. The hip hop artist also spoke on not eating red meat and not agreeing with forcing animals to perform.
As for ending the cruelty, PETA states that the only way everyone can prevent such things from happening is to never buy or wear any fur or fur trim and to encourage others to do the same.
Waka Flocka isn’t the first to take a stand in the cruelty against animals by joining PETA in an anti-fur campaign. Other notable hip hop artists include Travie McCoy, Chuck D, Kid Sister, Common and others.
